Arriving at Popham there was mud and standing water on the track to the site. Luckily, the BMW stand on the right hand side of the field was clear of the wet and muddy main field. With the help of the Christian Motorcyclists Association the gazebo was up and BMW members soon arrived. Our location allowed us to observe some interesting arrivals as people tried to get a grip on the wet surface. Only three bikes fell over and there were soon many hands to help the unfortunate and embarrassed riders. Somewhat amusingly, all the old bikes with old treaded tyres and relatively low power engines had no trouble at all. The newer machines was not so lucky. Some bikers tried to park along the fence within our stand area to avoid the mud; we told them they could stay if they joined the club! From the comments I overheard from those who took part in the ride out they had a good run only interrupted by the occasional awkwardly driven 'tin box'. I also visited the parked aircraft area and spotted the very nice red and white Great Lakes, built in 1978 in the USA. Report by John Broad. |
